Fresh Start During Back To School Season

An Update from our Executive Director

Hello Reader!

As we transition from the relaxed days of summer to the busy back-to-school season, we need to remember to tap into our mind-body practices to help us be grounded and present to the moment. Our toolkit is full of valuable resources to navigate this time with ease and mindfulness.

Autumn is a time to cleanse and let go. You may notice the world around us beginning to turn inward. Trees are shedding their leaves and animals are gathering food to prepare for the long cold months ahead. Our bodies are naturally meant to do the same - shed, turn inward and let go.

One of my favorite practices during the fall season to help us let go are Twists. They focus on the Manipura or third chakra - our solar plexus. This chakra is housed near the navel center. Activating this space brings about a sense of "I will," by building our inner fire or tapas. Our tapas helps us to burn away old patterns, laziness and get rid of things that are no longer serving us. When this chakra is in balance we're able to move powerfully and use this power to do good in the world.

As we transition back into the busy school year, we’re reminded to take time to ground, be still, and breathe.

With gratitude,

Hannah Davis, LCSW, LMSW, E-RYT-200, YACEP

Program Highlight: Safe Space Yoga

Safe Space Yoga is helping individuals to heal from toxic stress and overcome obstacles. Safe Space Yoga gives individuals an opportunity to explore mind-body practices, like movement and the arts, with specially trained movement teachers. Our Facilitators work with those who have histories of poverty, being unhoused, trauma, addiction and behavioral challenges. SSY is our signature trauma-informed intervention program.

Trauma-informed yoga is an approach that recognizes the individuality and specific needs of a student who has experienced trauma in their life. Trauma-informed yoga is a safe and effective way for individuals living with trauma to develop a mindful awareness of their bodies, which can lead to deeper healing and resilience.

Mindful action, like yoga and other forms of movement, have been found to be a valuable tool in the healing process. There is evidence that yoga helps with overall well-being, depression and anxiety.

We want everyone to develop a healthy sense of Self, Community, and Belonging.
